Screen EVERYONE with an objective test (subjective referral is the failure point), accelerate by subject on demonstrated mastery criteria, run achievement-selected advanced classrooms with genuinely advanced curriculum — and skip gifted branding, IQ-label gatekeeping, and boutique enrichment.

Verdict
Acceleration works in the sense that matters. The famous g=0.70 vs same-age peers is selection, not causation; the honest cell is g=0.09 vs the older classmates accelerants join — a year-younger child holds pace, banking a year of schooling at negative cost. On top of that no-harm floor, SMPY's 35-year skipper data show grade skippers doubling STEM doctorate rates (16.3% vs 7.9%) and out-producing matched controls by 50 (selection-fragile — modest hidden bias would erase it; also male-driven), while the standard objection is dead: acceleration bears zero relation to psychological well-being at age 50, replicated. Read the package as no harm + free year + probable compounding.
The gifted label is inert; the content isn't. At the IQ-cutoff margin, gaining the label, the classroom, and the peers does nothing (RD ~0 at both the 130 and 116 thresholds; the GT-magnet lottery adds only a grades/class-rank drop — the big-fish cost). The same district's achievement-ranked classrooms moved high-achieving minority students ~0.5 SD. Select on demonstrated achievement; skip the IQ-label apparatus. (Caveat: these are margin-local nulls — nothing bounds effects for the far right tail, SMPY territory, where no lottery exists.)
Identification is the bottleneck, not ability. Universal screening with unchanged cutoffs tripled gifted placement among poor/ELL students — and placement reverted when the screen was defunded. Referral pipelines, not the ability distribution, produce gifted gaps. The same logic held for algebra placement: objective criteria beat subjective gatekeeping for equity and outcomes.
