Curriculum is the one lever where the entire cost is attention (~$36/student, ~40x class-size cost-effectiveness when real differences exist) — which is why the evidence arc matters so much:

  1. Under randomization, curricula genuinely differ — but as a floor, not a ceiling: the Agodini RCT's stable loser (minimal-guidance constructivist) trailed all rivals by 0.22 SD; the heterogeneous winners were indistinguishable.
  2. The brand-picking lever collapsed post-Common-Core: six-state evidence puts between-textbook differences at ~0.00–0.03 SD among mainstream aligned texts (the 2016 "textbooks rival teacher quality" claim did not survive its own replication). Implementation is hollow everywhere: ~7% exclusive use, ~3 days of career textbook PD.
  3. A real pedagogical contrast plus implementation support still buys something: whole-package adoption (materials + training + network) ≈ +0.07–0.10 SD/yr at ~£131/pupil.
  4. The content bet is the upside: the Core Knowledge kindergarten lottery (ITT 0.24, TOT 0.47 on grade 3-6 state reading) remains the strongest curriculum result anywhere in this database — genetic-confound-resistant by design, and still a single unreplicated whole-school bundle.
