Does teaching visual art produce artistic skill?
Nobody has tested it. There is no controlled trial in which art instruction is the input and independently measured art skill is the outcome — the field's core claim is the one it never studied.

The base claim of visual-art education has no controlled evidence in either direction. A systematic review of every quasi-experimental and experimental arts-education study across music, drama, dance and visual arts found ONE visual-arts study among 26, and its outcomes were self-efficacy and self-concept, not artistic skill. The strongest study in existence is a single-cohort pre-post with no control group: 42 art students at a selective institution, eight hours of studio instruction a week for five months, moving blind-rated drawing quality by 0.17 points on a seven-point scale (t = 2.82, p < .01) — with no detectable change at all in the first two months and no way to separate instruction from practice effects. The largest arts-education randomised trial ever run (42 schools, Houston) did not measure whether any child got better at making art. Meanwhile drawing ability at age 4 is 29% heritable and genetically correlated at .52 with general ability ten years later, so the trait is neither purely taught nor easily attributed to teaching.
Teach art, and be honest that you are teaching it on judgement rather than on evidence — because there is no evidence either way, which is a different and more defensible position than pretending there is. Two things worth knowing while the evidence does not exist: the bottleneck in observational drawing is misperception of the object rather than the hand, so instruction should train looking; and five months of intensive studio teaching produced a change you need blind raters to detect, so expect slow returns and do not judge a programme on a term.

Insufficient — and the shape of the absence is the finding.
This archive has recorded thin literatures before. This one is different in kind. Visual-art education has not merely failed to produce good evidence that teaching art teaches art; it has produced almost no attempt. A systematic review of every experimental and quasi-experimental evaluation across the four arts domains found one visual-arts study among twenty-six, and that one measured self-concept. The largest arts-education randomised trial ever run — 42 schools, more than 10,000 children, six administrative outcomes and eight survey constructs — did not measure whether a single child got better at making art.
Compare music, which is the right comparison because the two subjects make the same political argument. Music has one meta-analysis of teaching on musical outcomes and at least six on transfer. Visual art has zero and several. Both fields decided the interesting question was the spillover. Music at least kept a foot in its own domain.
To be exact about what insufficient means here: it is not a claim that art teaching does not
work. It is the archive's honest default when only uncontrolled evidence exists, and the practical
reading is the one METHODOLOGY specifies for an old practice with a survival record and no causal
evidence — a reasonable default, unproven.

Chamberlain et al. is the high-water mark and it is a pre-post. Forty-two students at Pratt Institute, eight hours of drawing instruction a week plus homework, blind-rated observational drawings at three time points over five months. The time coefficient is 0.17 on a seven-point scale, p < .01 — about a third of a point after roughly 160 hours of elite studio teaching. Nothing was detectable over the first two months. And without a control arm, repeated practice on the assessment task cannot be separated from the instruction. The authors say so, and they draw the comparison themselves: their field is "in stark contrast to the large body of evidence from longitudinal designs suggesting that musical training exerts causal impacts."
Cohen and Bennett tell you what a curriculum would have to move, and flagged the gap in 1997. Their decomposition finds that drawing inaccuracy comes from misperceiving the object — not from motor coordination, not from decision-making, not from misjudging one's own work. The sentence that should embarrass the field: "Although there is no experimental evidence that drawing inaccuracies resulting from delusions can be overcome, art students readily acknowledge these errors and correct them." Twenty-eight years later the experimental evidence still does not exist.
Studio Thinking is the field's flagship and it measures nothing. It is a careful qualitative ethnography of five teachers in two selective arts high schools, producing the eight "studio habits of mind." It has no control group, no pre-post design and no effect size, and a published review notes it "makes no attempt to prove anything about the benefits of arts education, but rather make a case for them." The intellectual history is worth stating plainly, because it is the same authors: Winner and Hetland ran the REAP meta-analyses, found no transfer, and then turned to describing what art class cultivates intrinsically. That was the right move. Nobody in that lineage then ran the experiment.
Hereditarian-lens assessment
Risk: medium, for an unusual reason — the confound is not contaminating a positive finding, because there is no positive finding. It is contaminating the impression that art teaching works, which rests entirely on expert-versus-novice comparisons.
Arden et al.'s twin study is the only genetically informative evidence on drawing: drawing at age 4 is 29% heritable [.22, .35], almost exactly as heritable as general ability at the same age, and the genetic correlation between drawing at 4 and g at 14 is 0.52 [.31, .75]. So children who draw well at four share genes with children who reason well at fourteen. The whole cross-sectional drawing-expertise literature — artists outperform non-artists on perceptual tasks, artists have different grey-matter distributions — is comparing self-selected experts to everyone else on a trait that is heritable and correlated with general ability. None of it can separate training from selection, and none of its authors claim it can.
One thing the lens does not license here. Arden's shared-environment component for drawing is non-trivial (around .26), which is exactly where family and school input would sit. Heritability of 29% at age 4 leaves a great deal of room for teaching. The premise says correlations are presumptively confounded; it does not say the trait is fixed.
Boundaries & what critics say
insufficientis notno-effect. Nothing here says art teaching fails. It says nobody looked. Given the archive's Lindy reasoning, an old practice with no causal evidence is a reasonable default, unproven — not a candidate for cutting.- The measurement problem is real and is part of the excuse. Judging art quality requires blind expert raters and a standardised task, which is more expensive than a reading test. Chamberlain et al. show it can be done at inter-judge reliability 0.98. The obstacle is cost and will, not possibility.
- Chamberlain's sample is nothing like a school. Selectively admitted art students at an elite institution, aged 18, doing eight hours a week. Whether a primary art lesson moves anything is entirely unstudied.
- "Right-brain" drawing methods have no controlled evaluation at all. No pre-post trial, controlled study or dissertation evaluating Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was located, and the R-mode framing is described in the literature as metaphorical rather than neuropsychological. Treat it the way misc-fads treats mechanism-first marketing.
- Art appreciation is a separate and better-evidenced skill. Lottery-assigned museum tours do improve blind-rated critical analysis of unfamiliar paintings — see cultural exposure. That is art looking, not art making.
Practical guidance
- Teach art on judgement, and say that is what you are doing. "There is no evidence either way" is a defensible and honest position; "research shows art education develops creativity" is not, and it will not survive being checked.
- Train looking, not hands. The one robust empirical result about drawing is that error comes from misperceiving the object. Techniques that force accurate perception — measuring, negative space, inverted reference images — target the identified bottleneck, even though none has been trialled.
- Expect slow, hard-to-see returns. Five months of intensive studio instruction produced a change that needed sixteen blind judges to detect, with nothing visible in the first two months. Do not evaluate an art programme on a term's work.
- If you run a school, you can settle this cheaply. Two classes, a ten-minute still-life at the start and end of the year, blind rating. It would be the best evidence in the field.
Open questions
- Does school art instruction improve art skill? Genuinely unknown; a controlled trial with a blind- rated drawing outcome has never been run at school age.
- Does taught art skill retain after instruction ends? Unmeasured.
- Is the perceptual bottleneck trainable, as Cohen and Bennett suspected in 1997? Still untested.
- Does anything in visual-art education move creativity as opposed to self-reported creativity? The one visual-arts study in the systematic review measured the self-report version.
