Sample
10 studies of early writing comparing pen(cil) and paper with digital tools
Population
First writers in early primary schooling
Design
Research review (Computers & Education 95, 19-35) of the emerging literature comparing digital writing tools (computers, tablets) with pen(cil) and paper for early writing outcomes. Narrative synthesis across three theoretical traditions (sociocultural, cognitive-psychological, neuroscientific); no pooled effect size, and the underlying studies are small and heterogeneous in both intervention and outcome. Recorded because handwriting-versus-typing is one of the few writing questions a school actually has to decide as a policy, and because the honest answer is thinner than either side of the public argument suggests.
Key findings
The majority of the ten included early-writing studies indicate that handwriting outperforms keyboarding in early writing. Cognitive-perspective studies in particular report advantages of handwriting over keyboard writing in initial education, on the argument that handwriting trains fine motor skill in a way tied to letter-representation learning. The review does not produce a pooled effect size and does not claim the evidence is strong - it is a map of a small and theoretically fragmented literature, not a verdict.
Genetic confound
Not directly relevant - the comparison is between two instructional modalities within the same children or randomly allocated groups. The weakness is design quality and small n, not heredity.
