Design
Well-controlled randomised training study (Psychological Science) comparing typing, visual and handwriting learning conditions and testing generalisation to untrained tasks. Read because it is the paper most often cited as proving that "handwriting beats typing" for literacy, and because the archive should record what it actually studied.
Key findings
Handwriting practice compared with non-motor practice produced faster learning and greater generalisation to untrained tasks than previously reported, and only handwriting practice led to learning of both motor and amodal symbolic letter representations. The design is clean and the mechanism is interesting - but the participants are adults learning an artificial orthography, not children aged 4-18 learning to write, which is the archive's scope.
