Design
Meta-analysis of experimental and quasi-experimental handwriting instruction studies, comparing handwriting instruction against no instruction or non-handwriting instruction, and comparing instructional approaches against each other. Outcomes span handwriting itself (legibility, fluency) and composition (quality, length, writing fluency). Composition outcomes are researcher- scored. The effect on writing QUALITY (0.84) is implausibly large relative to every independently measured writing effect in the archive and should be read as an upper bound, not an estimate - Kim et al. (2021), restricted to the primary grades where handwriting instruction actually happens, found NO significant transcription effect on any composition dimension.
Key findings
Against no instruction or non-handwriting instruction, teaching handwriting produced greater legibility (ES = 0.59) and greater handwriting fluency (ES = 0.63) - i.e. teaching handwriting teaches handwriting, which is the secure part. It also produced gains in the quality (ES = 0.84), length (ES = 1.33) and fluency (ES = 0.48) of students' writing. The moderator results are the most immediately actionable content in the topic: MOTOR INSTRUCTION DID NOT PRODUCE BETTER HANDWRITING (ES = 0.10 for legibility, -0.07 for fluency), whereas individualising handwriting instruction (ES = 0.69) and teaching handwriting via technology (ES = 0.85) did improve legibility. That null for pure motor training is the finding that rules out most of what is sold as handwriting intervention - patterning, tracing and fine-motor exercises detached from letter formation.
Genetic confound
Low for direction; the corpus is experimental and quasi-experimental. Medium for the composition effects, which rest on researcher-scored quality ratings in mostly small studies and are contradicted by a newer, primary-grades-specific meta-analysis.
