Design
Multilevel meta-analysis pooling SINGLE-CASE design studies, with between-case and between-study variance components and age as a moderator. Read because it is the most recent SRSD meta-analysis and because a topic that grades SRSD needs to have looked at the newest evidence - but single-case designs carry no control group, so per METHODOLOGY they are grade D and cannot bear on a causal magnitude that is already estimated from cluster-randomised trials.
Key findings
SRSD had large, statistically significant effects on number of words written and on overall writing quality, with variability both between cases and between studies; older students benefited more, but only for number of words. The population (students with ASD) and the design class (single-case) both sit outside what the writing-strategy topic's verdict rests on.
Genetic confound
Not applicable - within-participant designs. The relevant weakness is the absence of any control group, so maturation, practice and regression to the mean are not separated from treatment.
