Effects of Computerized Instruction on the Use of Punctuation Strategies by Students with LD

Design
The only randomised controlled trial anywhere whose target and outcome are PUNCTUATION ITSELF. Six computer-delivered lessons covering eight punctuation marks, roughly 11 hours of instruction. Recorded chiefly to mark the boundary of what exists: the punctuation-instruction evidence base has exactly one randomised trial, it is in adolescents with learning disabilities, and it is delivered by software developed within the same research tradition (the University of Kansas strategic-instruction line), so independence is developer-involved. Nothing at primary-school age resembles it. Recorded from the abstract and from the National Center on Intensive Intervention's summary rather than the full paper.
Key findings
Students receiving the computerised punctuation strategy instruction scored significantly higher on punctuation usage and made fewer incorrect punctuation insertions than controls, and the gains generalised to sentences the students constructed themselves rather than only to the practice items. Effect sizes are described in the NCII tools-chart summary as very large. The generalisation result is the informative part - it is a within-study demonstration that punctuation taught as an explicit strategy can reach self-generated sentences - but note that a self-constructed sentence is still a far lighter composition load than an extended piece of writing, so this is a step toward the transfer question rather than an answer to it.
Genetic confound
Low. Randomised assignment within a defined population; the sample is selected on disability status, which limits generalisation rather than threatening identification.
