Population
Beginning/early readers (mostly grade 1), English; normal and at-risk.
Design
The methodologically strongest phonics synthesis: RCT-ONLY. Fixed- and random-effects estimates; assessed publication bias (funnel asymmetry; only 1 unpublished study located). Included RCTs mostly small and older; none reported allocation concealment.
Key findings
The cleanest (RCT-only) synthesis: systematic phonics significantly improves word-reading accuracy (d=0.27 fixed / 0.38 random) but effects on comprehension (0.24-0.35) and spelling (0.09) are NOT statistically significant. No evidence synthetic beats analytic. This is the grade-B anchor for the narrow claim that explicit code instruction improves word reading.
Genetic confound
RCT design controls selection/passive rGE. Comprehension (language/g-loaded) shows no significant experimental effect.
