The Evidence on Teaching

A Meta-Analysis of the Long-Term Effects of Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, and Reading Comprehension Interventions

grade Cmeta-analysisindependentunreplicatednumbers spot-checked
Sample
71 intervention-control comparisons, N=8,161 at posttest
Population
Preschool through school-age; typical and at-risk readers; multiple countries.
Design
Restricted to studies reporting BOTH posttest and follow-up (mean gap 11.2 months). Separates end-of-treatment from ~1yr follow-up effect sizes by intervention type. Aggregates mostly small, published-only trials.
Key findings
The anchor fadeout evidence. Overall reading effects fade 0.37->0.22 over ~11 months; PHONICS and (partly) FLUENCY fade most (phonics 0.33->0.07), while PHONEMIC AWARENESS and COMPREHENSION interventions maintain and even transfer. Interventions given at preschool/kindergarten age persist worst. Durability tracks intervention type and outcome class, not just whether an end-of-treatment effect existed.
Genetic confound
Reading is highly heritable by school age, so only experimental follow-ups are probative; correlational persistence claims are presumptively confounded.
Replication notes
Anchor durability meta. Follow-up values verified against the open-access full text (audit corrected earlier phonics 0.29->0.07 to 0.33->0.07).
