Design
Narrative review, the canonical citation for 'the laboratory in science education'. No search protocol, no inclusion criteria, no pooled estimates. It is a scholarship review — goals for science learning, constructivist accounts of knowledge building, how teachers and students actually behave in labs, and new assessment methodologies — rather than an effectiveness synthesis. Its 1982 predecessor is the source of the much-quoted conclusion that, on pen-and-paper measures, laboratory instruction shows no significant advantage over conventional instruction; the 2004 update softens this into a conditional claim about well-designed labs. Grade D.
Key findings
The most-cited review in the field, and the honest reading of it is that it is a research agenda, not an effectiveness verdict. Its load-bearing empirical inheritance is the 1982 Hofstein & Lunetta conclusion — that when outcomes are measured with pen-and-paper tests, laboratory instruction shows no significant advantage over conventional instruction, with the field's standard consolation being that the laboratory was 'at least as effective'. The 2004 update replaces that null with a conditional: WHEN WELL PLANNED AND EFFECTIVELY IMPLEMENTED, laboratory and simulation experiences situate students' learning in ways not possible in other science experiences. Note the structure of that sentence — it is unfalsifiable as written, it silently brackets simulation with hands-on work, and it is the rhetorical move by which a null became a mandate. The review's genuine contributions are its taxonomy of laboratory goals and its call for better assessment; it supplies no effect size and no controlled comparison.
