Population
US high-school students; individual-level and community-level (jurisdiction) evaluations.
Design
A systematic review with explicit methodological criteria — non-self-reported outcome data and adequate control for confounding — applied to a literature dominated by uncontrolled comparisons. It is the independent cross-check on the Cochrane review: different inclusion rule, partly different study set, same answer. Graded C rather than A because it pools observational evaluations alongside the randomised ones and does not meta-analyse. Read at abstract depth, so the study-by-study grading behind the conclusion has not been checked here.
Key findings
There is no convincing evidence that high-school driver education reduces motor-vehicle crash involvement rates for young drivers, either at the individual or the community level. By providing an opportunity for EARLY licensure, driver-education courses are associated with HIGHER crash-involvement rates for young drivers. The authors conclude that, absent evidence of crash reduction, communities should pursue alternatives such as graduated licensing.
Genetic confound
Medium. The individual-level studies compare students who took driver education with those who did not, and that choice is not random — but the direction of the likely selection bias (more conscientious families take the course) runs AGAINST the finding, which makes the null and the early-licensure harm more, not less, credible.
Replication notes
Independently reproduces the conclusion of Roberts & Kwan's Cochrane review of randomised trials, from a different and larger study set assembled under a different inclusion rule. Two review teams, two methodologies, one answer.
