Design
Systematic review (2000-2016) deliberately contrasting three exposures against academic achievement: cardiorespiratory fitness, self-reported physical activity, and objectively measured physical activity. Graded D because 80% of the corpus is cross-sectional and the synthesis is a vote count with no pooled estimate and no confounding adjustment across studies. Its value here is diagnostic rather than evidential: it is the cleanest available map of how the observational fitness-achievement literature behaves.
Key findings
This review inadvertently documents the confound. The measurement gradient is the finding: ALL 22 cardiorespiratory-fitness studies "generally support" a beneficial association with achievement; 10 of 16 SELF-REPORTED physical activity studies find positive associations; but the 11 studies using OBJECTIVELY MEASURED physical activity are "inconsistent". The exposure that correlates most reliably with achievement is the one that is most heritable and least behavioural (fitness, roughly 55-72% h2), while the exposure that is actually manipulable and objectively measured (accelerometer-recorded activity) shows no consistent relationship. A causal reading has this backwards; a gene-environment-correlation reading predicts it exactly. Only 2 of 51 studies were interventions.
Genetic confound
HIGH and largely determinative. Cardiorespiratory fitness heritability is roughly 55-72% (Schutte et al. 2016) and academic achievement heritability is roughly 60% by adolescence; the two share genetic variance and family circumstance. Cross-sectional fitness-achievement associations of the kind this review pools are exactly what passive gene-environment correlation produces without any causal path from fitness to learning. The review does not address this.
