Design
Matched-background comparison using the standardized Hebrew ELUL battery (phonological awareness, orthographic awareness, reading comprehension, listening comprehension) plus Wechsler subtests. Israeli schools use a uniform reading pedagogy, which makes the schooled arm unusually homogeneous and the contrast unusually clean — and also limits transfer to countries where school reading instruction varies. The home-school sample was not disaggregated by structured vs unschooling.
Key findings
Home-schooled children scored LOWER on reading comprehension but not on listening comprehension, and the reading gap was associated with lower phonological awareness. Home-schooled children had broader general knowledge. The decomposition is the interesting part and points the same way as the archive's reading topics: comprehension is downstream of decoding, decoding is downstream of explicit phonological instruction, and a home setting that supplies rich language and content but not systematic phonics produces exactly this profile — strong listening and knowledge, weak decoding, weak reading comprehension.
Genetic confound
Medium-to-high. Parental education and income were equivalent across groups, which is more than most studies in this literature manage, but families still self-selected and Israeli home-schoolers are a tiny, distinctive population.
Replication notes
Unreplicated. Converges in direction with the verbal-strong/skills-weak profile Gaither 2017 documents across US samples, and with Martin-Chang 2011's unstructured arm, but no study has directly replicated the phonological-awareness mediation.
