Design
The single most-cited empirical support for "teach social studies to raise reading", and it is observational. Regression of fifth-grade reading achievement on teacher-reported minutes per day spent on each subject in grades 1-5, controlling for MULTIPLE measures of kindergarten reading ability, total instructional time (so the estimate is a reallocation contrast, not an added-time one), and student, school and teacher covariates. Instructional time is measured by teacher survey about the classroom in general, not by observation and not per child. The authors are explicit about the limit: time use is not randomly assigned and may correlate with unmeasured factors such as teacher quality, so the result "could imply a causal effect or, at the very least, suggest how better teachers employ instructional time." Their Appendix B robustness check addresses reverse causation specifically - students in the 99th percentile of early reading growth received essentially identical later ELA and social studies time as those in the 1st percentile, so the correlation is not produced by fast readers being reassigned away from ELA. That check rules out one confound; it does not create identification. Published by a think tank (Thomas B. Fordham Institute) which advocates for content-rich curriculum, which is a stated-interest note rather than a design defect. Outcome is the ECLS-K IRT-scaled reading assessment - independent and standardized.
Key findings
Thirty additional minutes of daily social studies instruction in grades 1-5 (roughly the 10th-to-90th-percentile spread) predicts 0.15 SD higher fifth-grade reading, and the effect is significant only for social studies: ELA time 0.03 (ns), math 0.06 (ns), non-core subjects 0.03 (ns), and SCIENCE -0.01 (ns). The science null is the most awkward and most instructive result in the paper: science is also a content-rich subject, so a pure background-knowledge mechanism predicts a positive science coefficient too, and there isn't one. Effects were concentrated in the bottom three income quartiles (0.17-0.21 SD) and were near zero and insignificant for the wealthiest quartile - the opposite of the Matthew-effect pattern that the randomised content-curriculum trials show, which is itself a reason to suspect the observational and experimental estimates are not measuring the same thing. Descriptively, the paper also documents that US elementary students get about two hours a day of ELA and far less of anything else.
Genetic confound
High for a causal reading. Classroom time allocation is chosen by teachers and schools and correlates with school quality, parental composition and teacher skill, all of which are linked to children's heritable ability through selection into schools. Kindergarten-reading controls absorb the child's prior level but not the family and school sorting that continues to operate through grade 5. The archive's standing rule applies: a correlation is not a teachable lever until a causal design says so - and here the causal designs (Cabell 2025, the PACT trials) do NOT reproduce it on standardized measures.
Replication notes
No independent replication on a different cohort or dataset. The estimate is not corroborated by the experimental literature it is usually cited alongside: randomised content-rich curriculum trials find near-zero effects on standardized comprehension over one semester to one year, and the only randomised evidence anywhere near 0.15 SD (Kim 2024, 0.11-0.12) required three years of cumulative instruction against an active control.
