Effects of Reading Instruction on Learning Outcomes in Social Studies: A Synthesis of Quantitative Research

Design
A systematic synthesis, using meta-analytic techniques, of every quantitative study located between 1983 and 2013 that delivered literacy instruction within secondary social studies classes and measured content learning, reading comprehension, or both. Twelve studies in thirty years is the finding before any effect size is: this is a thin literature, and several of the twelve are the developer-led PACT and team-based-learning trials recorded separately in this cluster, so the synthesis is not independent of its largest constituent programme. Graded C rather than higher because it aggregates mixed-quality designs, and because it inherits the aligned-measure problem of its inputs - most content-learning outcomes in this literature are researcher-built unit tests. Read at ABSTRACT depth; the article is paywalled and the pooled estimates and study-quality codings have not been checked.
Key findings
Two conclusions, both cautious. First, content learning outcomes were consistently improved by instruction that included TEXT-PROCESSING activities - summarising and generating questions - which is a claim about retrieval-and-elaboration mechanics rather than about historical thinking as a discipline. Second, and framed by the authors as reassurance to social studies teachers who fear literacy mandates will cost them coverage: literacy instruction does NOT reduce content knowledge acquisition. Notably, the synthesis does not report a comparable positive conclusion for general reading comprehension, consistent with the individual trials in this cluster. Its main value here is as an independent confirmation of the size of the evidence base: twelve studies across three decades of secondary social studies.
Genetic confound
Low to medium. The pooled studies are intervention studies with comparison groups, so passive gene-environment correlation is not the operative threat; measure alignment and developer involvement are.
Replication notes
Not applicable - this is the synthesis. It predates the PACT effectiveness trial (Roberts et al. 2023) and all of the Kim/Cabell content-literacy RCTs, so it is a map of the field as of 2013 rather than a current estimate.
