Effects of Historical Reasoning Instruction and Writing Strategy Mastery in Culturally and Academically Diverse Middle School Classrooms
De La Paz S · 2005
grade Dquasi-experimentdeveloper-ledunreplicated
Sample
70 treatment and 62 control eighth-grade students
Population
Eighth-graders spanning talented writers, average-ability students and students receiving special education services
Design
An integrated social studies and language arts unit on westward expansion - 12 days of historical reasoning instruction plus 10 days of argumentative-writing strategy instruction - compared against 62 control students. The fatal detail is in the authors' own result statement: the comparison is between control students and "students who demonstrated MASTERY of the target strategies during instruction." Conditioning the treatment group on having successfully learned the treatment converts a causal contrast into a selection contrast, because mastery is itself predicted by ability and motivation. Combined with non-random assignment, small n and researcher-scored essays as the only outcome, no causal estimate survives.
Key findings
Treated students who demonstrated strategy mastery wrote historically more accurate and more persuasive essays than controls, reportedly regardless of initial learning profile. The direction is consistent with the rest of the disciplinary-writing literature (aligned, researcher-scored writing outcomes move) and the magnitude cannot be trusted because of the mastery-conditioned comparison.
Genetic confound
High. Non-random assignment plus a treatment group defined by having successfully acquired the treatment; ability and conscientiousness predict both mastery and essay quality.
Replication notes
The same research group's later and larger studies (De La Paz et al. 2014; Steiss et al. 2026) address the same intervention family with better designs, and the best-identified of them found no significant treatment-control difference.

Effects
| Outcome | Metric | Value | Measure | Timing | Vs | Horizon | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Historical accuracy and persuasiveness of argumentative essays | group comparison (treatment group conditioned on strategy mastery) | significantly higher for mastery-demonstrating treated students than for controls | researcher-designed | after a 22-day unit | business-as-usual | end-of-treatment | domain-skill |
