Design
Meta-analysis of 51 retrospective reports (1998-2018), 477 effect sizes. Practice histories via retrospective interview/questionnaire; outcome = attained competitive level. Fully observational: no randomization, survivorship bias (only persisters sampled), recall bias, and junior-vs-senior contrasts confound maturation, selection and dropout. Counts verified; per-variable pooled g not obtainable from open sources.
Key findings
The largest synthesis of the specialization question. Early specialization predicts JUNIOR success; early diversification plus later main-sport start predicts ADULT world-class status. The two profiles are near-opposites, so selecting on junior performance selects the profile that does NOT reach senior world-class. But this is descriptive: it cannot randomize childhood and inherits deliberate-practice's retrospective-recall problems. Read as evidence AGAINST early talent ID and the 'more hours earlier' model, NOT as proof that sampling causes eliteness.
Genetic confound
Attained level is selected on heritable capacity (elite status ~30-80% heritable; VO2max trainability ~47% in HERITAGE). Abler children sample more sports, get selected into programs, and persist — gene-environment correlation, not demonstrated causation.
Replication notes
Directionally consistent with Barth et al. 2022 and Güllich et al. 2023 (doi:10.3389/fspor.2023.1175718). Contested by early-specialization practitioners; no experimental replication is possible.
