Sibieta, L., et al. (Education Endowment Foundation) · 2022

grade Brctindependentunreplicated
Sample
Large cluster RCTs (COVID-degraded; ~31% attrition on RWI arm)
Population
England primary (RWI) and Year 7 struggling readers (Fresh Start). Controls already do mandated systematic synthetic phonics.
Design
Effectiveness trials of flagship branded synthetic-phonics programmes vs business-as-usual (which itself contains phonics). Independently marked outcomes.
Key findings
Branded/more-systematic phonics adds ~nothing over instruction that already contains phonics (RWI g=+0.05 ns), and may be negative for older strugglers (Fresh Start g=-0.22 for the Year-7 1-yr cohort). Bounds the marginal value of intensifying phonics beyond ordinary explicit practice at ~zero.
Genetic confound
RCT design controls selection.
Replication notes
COVID-degraded (floor effects, attrition); treat as B- with a strong caveat.
