Design
The paper that asks the only question that matters for schools - is the executive-function-to-achievement link causal? - and answers it by grading the literature on covariate control rather than by pooling everything.
Key findings
The unconditional meta-analytic correlation between EF and reading is 0.30 and between EF and maths 0.31, and it is remarkably invariant across age band, EF subcomponent and measurement type, still 0.25 for maths with a two-year gap. But only 12 of the 67 studies rigorously controlled for background characteristics AND IQ. Of five predictive studies with 13 EF-to-achievement associations, only ONE remained positive and significant after covariates; of seven concurrent studies, fewer than half survived. In almost all cases the standardized effect sizes drop by more than half. Only five randomised trials of EF-targeting interventions reported achievement outcomes at all. On Tools of the Mind the authors write that a careful read of the studies suggests no compelling evidence of a positive impact on executive function and no evidence of a positive impact on achievement. The one study that trained EF ALONE - computerised attention training - reduced teacher-reported inattention and had no impact on achievement. Verdict - no compelling evidence that a causal association exists, and the link should be established before EF programmes are taken to scale.
Genetic confound
Directly on point. The paper's central finding is that the EF-achievement correlation loses more than half its size once background and IQ are controlled, which is exactly the pattern this archive predicts for an observational association between two heritable traits.
Replication notes
Not applicable. Its conclusion has been borne out by the subsequent independent Tools of the Mind trials, which found nulls on both EF and achievement.
