Randomised trial run by the National Center for Rural Education Research Networks, scaling a personalised parent messaging intervention that had promising pilot results in eight rural districts out to 47 districts in 16 states, delivered through a student information system vendor. A second independent scale-up test of the same behavioural mechanism as Rogers & Feller and Robinson et al.
Key findings
Messages reduced absences by 1.7% to 4.5% (p < .05) at a cost of $4.07 per student. The authors translate this honestly - it amounts to 0.2 to 0.5 days saved per student per year - and explicitly warn of implementation challenges and heterogeneous effects that "suggest caution prior to full-scale adoption". No achievement outcome reported. Applying the best-identified causal return to attendance (roughly 0.005 SD per day) to 0.2-0.5 days implies an achievement effect on the order of 0.001-0.003 SD, which is indistinguishable from zero.
Genetic confound
Low - randomised, multi-site. The binding limitation is dose, not confounding, and it is the dose that makes the achievement step implausible.
