Design
An integrative research synthesis rather than a quantitative meta-analysis - it counts and characterises findings instead of pooling them, partly because text difficulty is operationalised inconsistently across the primary studies and the comprehension measures are heterogeneous. Graded C. It does not test the specific 95-98% accuracy threshold that placement practice uses, so it cannot validate that rule; what it can do is settle the direction.
Key findings
The vote count is one-sided in a way that is rare in this archive. On comprehension, of 13 studies, seven found harder text worse, five found no relationship, one found an optimum at moderate difficulty, and ZERO found harder text better - "In no study did a higher difficulty relate to greater comprehension." On fluency, increased text difficulty was related to decreased accuracy and rate, "particularly acute for poorer readers and beginning readers." Three of the four null comprehension studies had provided scaffolding, and the honest summary of those is that given support, students performed AS WELL as with easier text, never better. The nested Amendum et al. 2016 result is the sharpest single number: students reading text well above grade level, even at 90% or better accuracy, had significantly lower comprehension. For placement this means the archive can rule out the aggressive option - pushing a child into harder text does not accelerate them - without being able to endorse any particular accuracy cut-off.
Genetic confound
Low relevance. Most primaries manipulate the text a child reads rather than comparing children, so reading level is not being confounded with a child trait.
Replication notes
The direction is reproduced across 26 independent studies with no contrary finding, which is about as strong as a vote count gets.
